I too was surprised to read the salt diatribe in the Penzey's catalog. At first, I thought it was not a good idea. However, as I've continued to read (and enjoy) the Penzey's catalog, I've come to appreciate the personal point-of-view that the owner consistently takes. It's refreshing and different to see something like this. And, for me, it just emphasizes that the company cares about the health of its customers even if it means disenchanting a few. Keep up the thought-provoking blog posts!

[...] First, the largest and perhaps best site, for professional connection is LinkedIn. LinkedIn is primarily use for making professional connections, having discussions within specifically industries (groups), asking and answering questions, and job searches (both looking for jobs and finding people). Overall LinkedIn is mostly for business connections; yet, as LinkedIn grows there is the possibility that more members of academia will join and make use of this site. A simple overview one how LinkedIn can be used by academia is give by Digital 3.0 101: LinkedIn for Academia. Also, see William Morris’ blog about how having academics on LinkedIn can be helpful for finding experts. [...]

Thanks for the comment, John. I'm very interested in the Transformer and have no problem with alternate OSes -- I use Linux (Mint), OSX and Windows 7 on almost a daily basis. I'm currently using an iOS device because I get it through work, but that may change in the near future.

I'll have to stop by Best Buy and try it out. As I mention in my post, the two key things are portability and the keyboard. All I truly need in terms of OS is to be able to edit text files and run a fast browser (Chrome or Opera). I'm also interested in the Chrome OS notebooks, but I believe that currently they don't offer strong offline editing capabilities.

I don't know what type of operating system environment you're looking for, but if it's the cloud-heavy app-based environment you'd like to work with while still having the ability to type more comfortably than an on-screen keyboard, I suggest checking out the Asus Eee Pad Transformer (usually just called the Transformer or TF101). It's an Android-based tablet that has a keyboard doc accessory that not only allows for chiclet keyboard typing but also contains an extra battery to extend its life about 60-80% (depending on the type of use). It's running Android 3.1 Honeycomb (the tablet version), and has similar specs to the Moto Xoom. The keyboard dock also contains two USB ports and a regular SD card port, as well as a microSD slot on the tablet itself. The tablet with the keyboard dock accessory should run about $450 total at your local Best Buy or Frys Electronics (MSRP is $399 for the tablet, $150 for the dock).

This is all contingent on being into trying out the Android operating system and its ecosystem, which is definitely different than the iPad in terms of content but very similar in form and function. I'm an advocate of the Android devices but I also don't hold any ill will toward Apple's platform-- I'm a mobile computing evangelist in general. However, something like the Air may very well be more your cup of tea depending on your needs. It's never a bad idea to see what options are out there, though.

Whoa! I made some of those for Father's Day treats a couple of years ago. They called them some sort or oreo thing but it was chocolate cake with a filling inside.

If you click through to the New York Times story I linked to in the post, it'll have all the details. In short: a Whoopie Pie is a Suzy Q and it comes from Amish country and the Boston area.

My, I must find out what a whoopie pie actually is. How out of the current I must be. If it is regional, what part of the country.
